Troubleshooting Tips for Common Air Conditioning Repairs

Repair Tips

There are some basic air conditioning repairs that most homeowners can perform on their own instead of calling a professional. Try some of these tips at home and you might be able to avoid the expense of having an expert work on your system. Here are a few of the more common problems you’ll probably be able to tackle.

Problem 1 – The AC Isn’t Running

This is one of the easiest air conditioning repairs you can perform on your own. If you notice that your unit’s condenser isn’t operating, check to make sure it is getting power. The problem could be a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse.

If that’s not the problem, check your thermostat to see if it’s working properly. Lower it by five degrees and see if the AC comes on. Unfortunately, if these two fixes don’t work, you’ll need to call a professional because you could have a major issue such as a failed compressor or a bad motor.

Problem 2 – Your Home Isn’t Cool Enough

This is another issue you can easily troubleshoot by simply turning down the thermostat a few degrees. If your home still isn’t getting cool, the reason could be that it’s extremely hot outside. No matter how low you turn down the temperature, it might not get cool enough simply because the outside temperature is too high. If that’s not the case, however, you might need to replace your air filter.

Problem 3 – The AC Turns Off and On too Often

Check your outside unit to make sure it’s not obstructed by dirt, debris or something else. If the grill is dirty, try cleaning it to see if that fixes the problem. If cleaning and removing obstructions don’t work, then get in touch with an expert.
