Home Air Conditioner Troubleshooting and Maintenance

AC Troubleshooting

You rely on your home’s air conditioner on a daily basis. During the summer, when temperatures are at their highest, you need to come home to a comfortable environment. Like any appliance or tool, an air conditioning system requires thorough troubleshooting and maintenance.

These tasks are best left to a professional with experience. Finding a minute issue within the internal components of an air conditioner is often a confusing and time-consuming ordeal. Let a service technician help!

Dirty Filter

The most common cause of a broken air conditioner is a dirty air filter. A clogged filter will restrict the airflow of a unit, therefore decreasing its overall efficiency and ability to cool your home.

For most homes, the air filter should be changed or cleaned monthly. In homes with pets or plenty of foot traffic, you may need to replace the filter more often. If you’ve yet to clean the air filter, do it now.

Warm Air Leaking In

While the majority of your home may feel fresh and comfortable, hot air spots are all too common. If this problem sounds familiar, you may need to examine your window seals.

For room air conditioners installed in a window, seals around the unit can shrink or may be improperly placed. If this is the case, warm air from outside will seep in. Reseal around the entire unit using weather-stripping.

Thermostat Malfunctioning

Often, a thermostat on the wrong setting can lead homeowners to believe something worse is wrong with their air conditioning system. If you have a programmable thermostat in the house, check to ensure it’s at a comfortable setting. Keep in mind that every degree you raise the thermostat, you’ll save money on your utility bills.
